Specific Student Groups 2026

Including Young Carers, SEND and PP Students
What is a Young Carer and what might a Young Carer do?
A young carer is someone aged 18 or under who helps look after a relative with a disability, illness, mental health condition or a drug/alcohol problem. It might be a parent or a sibling.
- Around 1 in 5 children and young people are young carers
- In England, this is about 800,000 aged 11-16
- These are students in our school who are quietly doing a lot at home, which is not
always seen or known about.
Young carers may do:
- Practical tasks: cooking, housework, shopping.
- Physical care: helping someone out of bed, personal care (helping dress).
- Emotional support: talking someone through distress, being there for them.
- Managing budget, collecting prescriptions, helping with communication.
- Looking after siblings – young carers might also be doing this.
