History

The A Level history course is exciting and varied and offer students the opportunity to develop a wide range of historical skills.

A Level students will complete:

• a breadth study on the Tudors 1485-1603 worth 40% of the A Level course.
• a depth study, also worth 40% of the A Level course – revolution and dictatorship focussing on Russia and the Soviet Union, 1917–1953.
• a historical enquiry on the causes of the Final Solution. This allows students to demonstrate independent research skills. They will use historians’ interpretations and first hand evidence to examine the complex roots of the anti-Semitism which led to the Holocaust in WW2.

Assessment:

20% coursework, 80% end of course examination.

Entry requirements:

Grade 6 at GCSE History. If GCSE History has not been studied then grade 6 in English will be considered.

Extra Curricular:

The History department also aims to provide students with many opportunities outside the classroom. Year 12 students often participate in the Lessons from Auschwitz programme run by the Holocaust Education Trust and are given responsibility for organising the school’s commemoration of Holocaust Memorial Day. Students also act as mentors for younger pupils. The department hopes to run a trip to Berlin which will form an important component of the research into the Final Solution for Year 12/13 students.

Future progression and careers:

The knowledge, understanding and skills developed in History can lead to a wide range of degree courses and career paths in academia, research, civil service, politics, journalism, consultancy, banking, business, PR, marketing, retail, accountancy and more.
